Crisis Response Plan

A school counselor needs a crisis response plan so they can act quickly, calmly, and confidently when a student is in danger or experiencing a serious mental health concern. In those moments, there isn’t time to figure things out on the spot—having a clear plan ensures students are kept safe, the right steps are followed, and support is provided in a consistent and responsible way.

Confidentiality Statement

Confidentiality is such an important part of school counseling because it helps students feel safe. A lot of what students bring into the counseling office is personal, and if they don’t trust that their information will be handled with care, they’re much less likely to share honestly. When students know they have a space where they can talk without fear of judgment or everything being repeated, it builds that relationship - and that’s really where the growth happens. Whether it’s academic stress, friendship issues, or bigger emotional concerns, trust is the foundation for all of it.

At the same time, I’m always clear that confidentiality has limits. My number one priority is student safety. If a student is at risk of hurting themselves, someone else, or if there are concerns about abuse or neglect, I am required to take that information further to get them the help and protection they need. In those situations, I only share what is necessary and involve the appropriate people, like parents, administrators, or outside agencies.

I make a point to communicate this clearly from the beginning. With students, I explain confidentiality in a way that makes sense for their age so they know what to expect. With parents and guardians, I’m open about how counseling works and what the limits are, so there are no surprises. I also work with staff to help them understand when information should stay private and when it needs to be shared. Being upfront and consistent helps build trust with everyone while still making sure students are safe and supported.

Informed Consent

Informed consent is important because it helps students and families understand what counseling is, what to expect, and what the limits of confidentiality are. It builds trust and ensures everyone feels informed, respected, and comfortable with the support being provided.

Why is This Important?
